ntuser.dat growing 30MB> for all users.
Hello,
The ntuser.dat is growing and growing. At this moment the ntuser.dat is 30MB> and I have deleted the ntuser.dat from a user some month ago.
The normal size of a ntuser.dat is <1MB.
I have this problem with all users
We use Server 2003 R2 with roaming profiles
I have loaded the ntuser.dat in to regedit to see what causes this problem.
But how I can I see what keys take up all the space of troubleshot this further?
Thank you.
Kevin

Hi,
Based on the current situation, I suggest you remove the large user profile and recreate it. After that, please follow the suggestions below to limit
the profile size.
To manage the user profile size, use the Limit profile size policy setting. This setting is in the User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\User
Profiles node of the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in. You can set the maximum size of the roaming user profile and determine the system’s response when the limit is reached. When you set this policy, the Proquota.exe program is enabled. This program
alerts users when their user profile exceeds a predefined limit, and it prevents users from logging off until the size of the profile files is reduced.
In addition, you may also exclude folders from roaming profile and redirect folders from the roaming profile to the home directory to reduce the size
of your profiles.

Hello Kevinosa,
I would use Reg.exe to compare ( /compare option) the ntuser.dat with one from a system with the default.
That should help you determine what is growing the size of the registry, what key or keys are being written to in large volumesThanks, Darrell Gorter [MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I would double check your GPO's/SCOM/Software packages. Something in the mix is storing data. I have seen a rather less than coded well application bloat user profiles out with a local data cache vs. actually implementing a good database method
of storing data.
I would run something like Tree Size free on the users folder C:\Users and look for what is hiding in thier profile folders.
Just a thought.:P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. The answer is always 42, or reboot.

No, Tree size will show the Directories, and can add insight into a users folder, In current environment, we had a similar issue with user profiles and the ntuser.dat growing to 2GB for each, Tree Size allowed me to see the less than greatly coded application
that was seeding each users profile up with data. :P Advice offered, If you need more help it is advised to seek the council and advice of paid professionals. The answer is always 42, or reboot.

Hello,
While browsing the registry I found this:
So many backups from a .prf we use up to 500!. In de PRF I added this rule (bold):
[General]
Custom=1
ProfileName=Rodi_Default_Profile
DefaultProfile=Yes
OverwriteProfile=Append
ModifyDefaultProfileIfPresent=false
BackupProfile=No
I will monitor the profile size this week to see if it is still growing.
Thank you.
